Kala Jones

Kala has over nine years of experience in education. She has leveraged her wealth of experience and unwavering commitment to student success to guide her students through the intricate maze of college choices, scholarships and financial aid. As a result, her students have gained admissions to Ivy and Ivy Plus universities, top liberal arts and single-gendered colleges, and prominent research institutions. She also assists students with graduate school admissions and highly selective scholarships such as Posse and QuestBridge. Kala holds several degrees from top US colleges and universities. In addition to her PhD in Teaching and Learning, she holds an educational specialist degree as well as psychology, English and biology degrees. She is widely traveled and is committed to assisting scholars reach their post-secondary goals.

Garrett Foster

Garrett graduated summa cum laude with Disciplinary Honors in Philosophy from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 2021. In his senior year at UNCG, he was awarded the Provost Student Excellence Award, the university’s highest undergraduate honor. After getting his start as the UNCG Philosophy Department’s writing tutor in 2020, Garrett has since tutored in a wide range of academic disciplines, helping students all the way from middle school to the undergraduate level by “untangling” complex concepts in accessible ways. Garrett loves to tutor because he's experienced firsthand the indelible effect that a good instructor can have on a person's life. He considers himself fortunate to have had teachers throughout his academic career who made an effort to learn how he learned best and to accordingly tailor their instruction to his learning style. He believes in doing the same for the students he works with. There’s nothing more rewarding to Garrett than watching the lightbulb turn on in someone’s mind—that moment when everything clicks. That moment is the reason he tutors, and he considers it his mission to help as many people reach it as he can. Outside of his passion for education, Garrett is a film enthusiast and plays competitive chess.

Carolyn Kost

Carolyn has over twenty years of experience in college counseling in boarding and day schools and private practice. She has held various positions in six universities, studied in ten, and visited over 150. In addition to the UCLA Graduate Certificate in College Counseling, Carolyn holds master's degrees in social science and information science and has completed all the requirements and exams for a PhD. Her students have attended all of the Ivy and Ivy Plus, including MIT and CalTech; UCAS, Australian, and Canadian universities; and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. She also assists students with graduate and professional school admissions.

She has published over 100 articles for a variety of publications and co-authored several books, with another in progress. Her book Engage! Setting the Course for Independent Secondary Schools in the 21st Century has been used as a textbook at Johns Hopkins Graduate School of Education. She is bilingual in Spanish and has lived and traveled widely in Chile, Mexico, Colombia, and Trinidad, West Indies.

Roshni Chandihok

Roshni graduated from Stony Brook University where she received her Bachelor of Science in Biology. She attended Hofstra University and received her Master's in Healthcare Administration with a concentration in finance. She has a passion for improving healthcare outcomes specifically by leveraging strategic analytics and is pursuing a career in healthcare consulting. Throughout her high school, undergraduate and graduate career, teaching has always been an integral part of her life, and she has experience in private tutoring as well as college level classroom teaching. Roshni loves working with students to utilize strategies and insights to tackle tough problems. When Roshni isn’t working and studying, you’ll find her enjoying a healthy and fit lifestyle, practicing her French, challenging herself by learning to cook new cuisines, and painting. Roshni enjoys traveling the world and immersing herself in other cultures.

Chris Judkins

Chris graduated from The University of Texas at San Antonio with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and a minor in Biology. After graduating, he jumped right into teaching and tutoring and hasn't looked back. For more than a decade, Chris has taught Chemistry, Biology, and Physics at the high school level and tutored a variety of academic subjects and all manner of standardized tests including the SAT, ACT, and MCAT. Most recently Chris has been teaching and tutoring various subjects in Taiwan to local high school students. When he's not teaching, he loves to play pickup basketball. If seen in the wild, he can be drawn in with a casual mention of tacos.

Tiffany Smith

Sarah Steele

Sarah has helped hundreds of students and families navigate the college admissions process through her position as the Assistant Director of College and Academic Planning at a private K-12 school in South Carolina. She understands all the parts of the college planning process, the timeline, what it takes to execute a comprehensive college search, how to write an essay that will stand out and the most effective way to complete college applications as well as what courses to take in high school that will ensure collegiate success. The most rewarding aspect of her role in college advising is coming alongside students as they develop a college search plan, proceed into the application process and finalize acceptance into an institution. She enjoys spending time with her family especially when it can be at the lake on a paddleboard.

Azadi Bhatt

Azadi is a graduate of the University of Virginia with a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and is currently pursuing a Master of Arts degree in Anthropology at the New School for Social Research. They've been tutoring both online and in-person for the past 6 years, specializing in math-based subjects for students from a wide breadth of grade levels, although they enjoy teaching all subjects. When they're not tutoring, Azadi is usually playing music or burying their nose in an old sci-fi book or adding words to one of their many manuscripts.

Gabriel Ades

Gabe is a Senior at Calhoun High School on Long Island, where he is president of the Robotics Competition team and throws shot-put for the Track and Field team. He loves math, science, and engineering, and is pursuing a career in mechanical engineering. Gabe enjoys coding and video games and is also a frequent concert goer. Gabe has a dog named Bear who likes to make himself known during tutoring sessions. Method helped him ace his SAT and ACT, and he's excited to pay it forward!

Sohyun Tallis Lee

Dr. Lee has a Doctorate of Education in Organizational Leadership and has worked as a counselor, educator, and learning developer in K-12 education and leadership coaching for over 20 years. She has placed students at such schools as Yale, Stanford, Johns Hopkins University, Duke, Cornell, Columbia, Carnegie Mellon University, University of Chicago, University of Michigan, and UCs. Dr. Lee has extensive experience working with students of all ages and backgrounds. She has counseled and mentored numerous students and their families to achieve all aspects of student success and wellness.

Thomas Horan

Thomas joined Method Learning in 2022 as an academic coaching specialist, and has succeeded in working with students to improve their organization, motivation, and educational focus. With nearly three decades experience in the classroom Tom has helped many students achieve their academic goals. He stands ready to help your child get organized, become aware of time management & assist in many academic areas.

Doreen Rose

Doreen Rose is a New York State Certified Secondary Spanish and Italian teacher, with additional certifications in elementary foreign language and English as a Second Language. She graduated magna cum laude from Arizona State University with dual Bachelor of Arts degrees in both Journalism and Spanish, and a minor in Portuguese. She received her Master of Science in Secondary Education from Dowling College and most recently completed a post master’s advanced certificate in TESOL at Queens College. She has worked as a Spanish teacher at Locust Valley High School, preparing students for the Spanish Checkpoint B and International Baccalaureate examinations. Having travelled extensively throughout her life, Doreen shares her unique and broad perspective with her students. Outside of work, she owns her own small farm and competes regularly in dressage competitions throughout the United States with her horses.

Steve McGrath

With an academic background in English and adolescent education, Steve has brought a unique passion to each of his endeavors with Method Learning over the course of the past 4 years. Whether it be in one on one, group, or class environments, his knowledge, enthusiasm, and calm demeanor have been a boon to hundreds of students. In addition to his role as a tutor, Steve also plays an integral role in Method Learning’s tutor training program, sharing his experience to help prepare new tutors to reach their full potential, and is the Lead Editor of Method Learning’s blog. Outside of Method Learning, Steve is an avid athlete, playing recreational hockey and training to compete in strength sports such as powerlifting and strongman.

Kristin Sawey

Kathy Vogdes

Kathy has been assisting families through the college admissions process for the past several years. She holds a bachelor’s degree in telecommunications from Indiana University Bloomington and a law degree from DePaul University College of Law. Kathy has practiced law for over 25 years. She is also a content writer and editor for LexisNexis. In her spare time, Kathy is active with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) of Illinois, where she is an essay grader for the LLS Scholarship for Blood Cancer Survivors and serves as the Chairman of the Leadership Committee for the Student Visionaries of the Year campaign. Kathy’s strengths lie in helping students discover their best-fit colleges by creating personalized college lists that align with each student’s unique preferences, goals, academic qualifications, and budget. Her in-depth knowledge and writing skills ensure that every aspect of the college search and application process is meticulously handled.

Keith Kamer

A Long Island native, Keith is one of the longest-tenured veteran tutors at Method Learning. He holds a dual degree in Mathematics and Applied Mathematics & Statistics from Stony Brook University. In addition to serving as a private tutor for the SAT, ACT, and academic mathematics, Keith has taught SAT and ACT Prep Courses at local schools and online. He has a reputation for being an especially good motivator whose no-nonsense approach has helped thousands of students raise their test scores. When he’s not tutoring, Keith can probably be found programming or watching football.

Tim Poynton

Dr. Tim Poynton has been a school counselor, counselor educator, and researcher for 24 years. He is currently an associate professor at the University of Massachusetts Boston, where he teaches college counseling and career counseling courses at the graduate level to current and future school counselors. He has also taught undergraduate students in a course titled “Work and Play: Counseling Skills for Life.” Dr. Poynton earned an undergraduate degree and a master’s degree from the State University of New York at Albany, and an Ed.D. from Boston University. Dr. Poynton has published more than 30 peer-reviewed publications, books, and book chapters, and has delivered more than 100 presentations across the country on topics ranging from college choice and career development to research methods and assessment in school counseling.

Nicole Velez

I graduated Summa Cum Laude with a BS from St. Joseph's College with a major in Math Education & a minor in Computer Information Systems. I received my master's degree from Stony Brook University also in Math Education. This is my 20th year teaching high school math. I have a very active family, with 3 kids that keep me busy. We like to have family game nights, movie nights, and to go on hiking adventures together.

Haritha Lakshmanan

Haritha is currently a sophomore majoring in physics with a double minor in economics and Spanish at the Macaulay Honors College at Brooklyn College. She is also a student in the Coordinated B.A.-M.D. program at CUNY Brooklyn College and SUNY Downstate Medical Center which is a 4+4 BA-MD program. Outside of academics, she conducts undergraduate research in semiconductors for photonic applications, serves as an undergraduate student government senator, and works as a peer tutor at Brooklyn College’s Learning Center in the subjects of general chemistry 1, 2, pre organic chemistry, and general physics 1. In her free time, she enjoys watching TV and reading books.

Kelley Kaminsky

Kelley Kaminsky began her career in education over 20 years ago, after working as a newspaper journalist and magazine editor. She has coached thousands of students in the writing process as a certified English teacher with a passion for helping students find their authentic writing voice—an increasingly important aspect of the college application process. Kelley currently serves as the college advisor for seniors at a private high school in Florida. She is well versed in developing college lists, organizing a timeline for task completion, applying for scholarships (including the Florida Bright Futures Scholarship), writing an impactful college essay, leveraging letters of recommendation, and finding the best fit. Above all else, Kelley develops positive and encouraging working relationships with the families she serves.

Joe Sferra

Patrick Jehle

Patrick Jehle graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 2000 with a BA in Great Books and from Rutgers University in 2004 with an MA in English Literature. He taught at the middle school, high school and college levels for almost twenty years. Patrick has also worked as a private SAT tutor, a writing coach, and a freelance editor and writer. From 2022-2024, he taught all major middle-school subjects (math, ELA, science, art, language) at Southshire Community School, a Montessori-style primary school in Bennington, Vermont. Patrick was born in New York City and lived in Brooklyn and Chicago before settling down in Vermont with his two children. His hobbies include writing fiction, painting, watching foreign and classic films, and reading everything he can get his hands on.

Randall Schmollinger

Randall is an experienced tutor with 5 years tutoring at the collegiate level and a bachelor's degree in mathematics from the University of Albany in NY. He loves helping students learn and grow along their educational journey. If he's not teaching he likes to practice Brazilian jiu jitsu or go for hikes in the catskill mountains.

Sienna Leaver

A Long Island native, Sienna is an AP scholar and top 5% in her class at Walt Whitman High School. In the past, she has tutored one-on-one in a wide variety of subject areas including but not limited to Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, Living Environment, Chemistry, and Italian. When she’s not tutoring, Sienna enjoys playing piano, writing creatively, and watching football.

Sree currently attends the Cooper Union in New York City, where she majors in Civil Engineering and hopes to specialize in structural engineering. She graduated from Hauppauge High School as IB and AP Scholar in the top 5% of her senior class. Sree has worked as a tutor and mentor, helping peers and younger students in a variety of subjects, including science (Earth Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics), mathematics (Algebra through Calculus), and humanities (World History, US History, English/Writing, Spanish). Sree is passionate about learning and education, and devoted to making academic study and test preparation a fulfilling experience for her students. In her free time she loves to sing, learn languages and cook.

Renai Foster

Born and raised in Queens, NY, Renai is a graduate of Amherst College, from which she received her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and Black Studies. She went on to earn a master’s degree from The Relay Graduate School of Education with a major in Secondary English Language Arts and simultaneously earned her NYS Teaching Certification. Renai has spent the last 5 years as a Middle School English teacher and tutor. Renai simultaneously serves as a Diversity, Equity Inclusion, Anti-racism and Accessibility advisory for students and staff. When she’s not teaching, Renai enjoys watching TV, trying new restaurants for her food blog, or spending hours in the gym.

Elliot graduated from Brown University with a degree in Mathematical Economics. After a brief stint as an insurance analyst, he joined Method Learning, where his confident and patient educational style would shine. As one of Method Learning most experienced and successful tutors, Elliot has helped thousands of students from around the world conquer the SAT and ACT. His desire to improve and innovate has driven the growth of Method Learning’s online learning division, which provides students access to the best instructors regardless of location. He still takes the SAT and ACT regularly, having achieved multiple perfect scores. When Elliot isn’t hard at work, you’ll probably find him cycling, playing ultimate frisbee, or mastering a new foreign language. When Kevin isn’t helping families navigate the college financial aid maze, he enjoys spending time with his wife, Alejandra, and their two American Hairless Terriers, Coco and Cabo, in Wanamassa, NJ. He also continues to develop innovative solutions for the ever-changing landscape of college planning.

Iffat Naveed

Iffat has a Bachelor of Science in Business Management from Adelphi University. Before joining Method Learning, Iffat had amassed several years of experience in individual and group tutoring for students at the elementary and secondary school levels. Her dream job growing up was to be a teacher, so she is thrilled to be able to teach classes and help numerous students at Method Learning. Iffat understands the challenges presented by standardized tests and the struggles faced by many students and does her best to provide an individualized approach that best suits each student. Outside of tutoring and developing her personal and professional skills, Iffat can be found painting, reading, and studying several foreign languages. She is currently attending law school.

Joseph Iaquinta

Joseph Iaquinta holds a Bachelor of Science degree in biology from Molloy College and a Master of Science degree in biology from Western Governors University. He began his teaching career in 2007 as an ESL teacher in South Korea and Vietnam. After obtaining New York State certification in Living Environment and Chemistry from CUNY Queens College, he began teaching high school biology and middle school general science. Currently he is an adult education teacher in New York City helping students obtain their HSE diplomas in order to enter college, trade school, or the workforce. Joseph started an online business last year and also manages an investment property. To wind down, Joseph enjoys going "off the grid" and taking long road trips.

Vaibhav Gargi

Vaibhav graduated from Cornell University, SC Johnson College of Business, in 2023 with his MBA (Masters in Business Administration) with a focus in Finance and Strategy. He also holds a BBA in Accounting and Economics from Baruch College (CUNY).

He is very passionate about tutoring and providing mentorship to the next generation. He has been tutoring on a part-time basis for 8+ years now at a collection of different test centers, online tutoring, and private tutoring. He enjoys working with students and helping to unlock their potential.

In his free time, he enjoys playing and watching all kinds of sports (basketball, football, baseball, tennis), spending time with friends and family, listening to music, and is a personal finance enthusiast. Above all, he is an ardent traveler who enjoys experiencing different foods and cultures around the world. His goal is to one day have seen all 7 Wonders of the World!

Kevin Dennis

Kevin graduated from SUNY Albany with a BA in History and minor in political science. After receiving his MA in Teaching in 2006, he taught English in Taiwan and then worked in a number of capacities in several Long Island schools. Since joining MTP in 2011, Kevin has tutored and taught classes for both the SAT and ACT. His energy, humor, and penchant for pop-cultural references make his tutoring engaging and as exciting as the SAT and ACT could possibly be.

Hiba Saeed

Hiba is a caring and dedicated tutor who is committed to helping her students reach their full academic potential. Her teaching style emphasizes on breaking down complex concepts tailoring to students needs, promoting active learning and critical thinking. She works with students in person and online, helping them with SAT, ACT, and secondary level Math preparation. In addition, Hiba teaches SAT preparation courses at Long Island high schools. Hiba holds a Bachelors degree in Mathematics from the University of Karachi with a minor in Statistics and Economics. Outside of tutoring, Hiba can be found spending time with family, Cricut crafting or taking care of her balloon decor business.

Roberto Suarez

Dr. Suarez is a school counselor and robotics educator with 20+ years of experience in college and admission counseling. Over the years, Roberto has held positions in college and international admission counseling, STEM and world language education, and many other fields. A co-founding committee member of College Board’s BigFuture, Roberto is regularly invited to sit on advisory boards and uses his years of experience for helping colleges design student match initiatives and help build tools and provide resources for students and families to navigate the college admission process. Along with his amazing wife, a special education teacher, Roberto has two incredible children who love piano, theater, soccer, dance and aspire to become a pediatrician and lawyer. He is an avid reader who enjoys practicing Kung Fu and Taekwondo, working out, stock trading, real estate investing, playing chess, and spending vacations with his family on the lake or next to the ocean.

Kara Liu

Kara is a dedicated SAT tutor at Method Learning, committed to empowering high school students to excel in their standardized tests. Demonstrating exceptional personal achievement, Kara scored a 1580 on the SAT and a perfect 36 on the ACT, both on her first attempts. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Economics and English from Yale University. Her academic background includes extensive coursework in statistics, computer science, and econometrics, equipping her with the analytical skills essential for effective SAT instruction. Her meticulous attention to detail and problem-solving abilities are instrumental in guiding students through the quantitative components of the SAT. Kara’s commitment to education is further evidenced by her role as a Full-time Copy Editor at the Houston Chronicle. There, she was responsible for fact-checking, editing articles, and managing a diverse network of columnists. This experience has honed her verbal proficiency, enabling her to adeptly assist students in mastering the reading and writing sections of the SAT. Beyond her professional endeavors, Kara has demonstrated leadership and mentorship through her involvement with the Yale Global Research and Consulting Group. Collaborating with esteemed organizations such as the World Bank and the United Nations, she effectively communicated complex concepts in an accessible manner. This ability to convey intricate information ensures that her tutoring sessions are both comprehensive and comprehensible. Zachery Alexander

Zachery Alexander grew up in Plainview, Long Island and currently resides in Queens, NY. He studied math and philosophy in college in New Paltz and has worked as both a teacher and tutor for various math classes at the high school and middle school level. He loves tutoring the SAT and ACT exams as well but math is far-and-away his favorite subject to teach. In his spare time, Zack enjoys hiking upstate, playing guitar, and is a huge fan of board game nights.

Donald McCarthy

Donald graduated from Adelphi University with a Bachelor of Arts in Literature and a Master of Arts in Adolescent Education, before completing his Master of Fine Arts in Writing at City College of New York. For the past eight years at MTP, Donald has worked with students one-on-one, in small groups, in the classroom, and online, helping them with the SAT, ACT, English Regents, and college application essays. He teaches SAT and ACT classes year-round both at our centers, local schools, and online. He has had great success with students thanks to both his educational background and his enthusiastic passion for teaching. His years of experience affords him a startling amount of knowledge about the SAT and ACT; if you have a question about one of the tests, he knows the answer. His database of knowledge about the tests makes him an outstanding tutor, but it’s probably not a good sign for his social life. Donald is also an Instructor of English literature and writing at SUNY Old Westbury and in his free time is probably writing, reading or watching the show LOST for the hundredth time.

Oree Livni

Oree is a passionate tutor who loves to help students reach their academic goals. After getting his bachelor’s in Mathematics from SUNY Albany in 2020, he’s now pursuing a graduate degree in music composition from Stony Brook University. Raised in Sag Harbor, he found that what helped him succeed in life the most was having a good mentor. Ever since, he has sought to emulate the best of his own teachers, and pass on a love for learning to every one of his students. When he’s not tutoring or studying, you can find him improvising music at his piano, or perhaps enjoying a good sudoku puzzle.

James Ingoglia

Jim is a graduate of the College of the Holy Cross, where he studied pre-med for two years and obtained a B.A. in history. He also graduated with honors from the Hofstra University School of Law and was a managing editor of the Law Review. After his undergraduate degree, Jim taught Chemistry and Biology at a Catholic high school in Queens and then English in Japan for several years. Following law school, he served as a federal law clerk and then practiced litigation for over 20 years. During that time, he taught law to paralegals at Hofstra University and coached a city high school's moot court and mock trial teams. Recently, Jim returned to teaching full-time at a Long Island Catholic co-ed high school, where he teaches English Skills to international students and Human Biology to juniors and seniors. Jim is an avid runner who ran distance events at Chaminade High School and Holy Cross and now coaches boys and girls high school track. When not teaching, Jim enjoys running and spending time at the beach with his wife Amy and two sons, Matt and AJ. In addition to tutoring SAT and ACT, Jim is available to teach lessons in speech and debate, History, English, and Biology.

Evan Wessler

Evan is Method Learning's Vice President of Student Success. He graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Bucknell University with a degree in Biology in 2009. After starting a biomedical sciences PhD program at Harvard University, he decided instead to pursue tutoring and leadership opportunities with Method Learning. Evan’s experience has given him the ability to excel as a top educator in the organization, and has helped develop his current responsibilities, which include teaching, managing Method Learning’s team of tutors and online courses, developing educational content, and expanding the reach of Method Learning’s private tutoring services.

Lauren McClellan

Lauren hails from Atlanta, GA and currently resides in the Upstate of South Carolina, where she enjoys a variety of outdoor activities afforded by the surrounding lakes and Appalachian foothills. In addition to her degrees in Special Education and Educational Leadership, she has gained valuable experience working in the K12 environment through teaching, developing curriculum, managing special education efforts, and supporting career exploration and transition for students from the high school setting into their post-secondary opportunities. For the past 6+ years Lauren has worked in the higher education setting managing student support and accommodations, expanding institution wide access and inclusion efforts, and developing transition supports for students starting or re-starting their college journey. Lauren is passionate about supporting students as they explore college and career options and transition into the next phase of their journey. She believes that by equipping students (and their support network!) with the knowledge and understanding of “how to college” and use the tools, supports, and resources available to them, we can promote growth, success, and an overall amazing college experience. When not working with students, Lauren can be found adventuring with her two boys and husband, trying new foods, or playing with her dogs.

Josh Alavanza

Josh is a graduate of York College with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and is currently applying for a Master of Science in Computer Science. He has taught students in every environment imaginable from one-on-one to online classrooms, from middle school to college. His success with students comes from his background in teaching and his passion for helping others. When he's not tutoring, Josh can be found in a rock climbing gym or on a hiking trail, as he loves the outdoors.
